Wetland Park Technology Campus
Wuhan, China
The project gestures to preserve the ecological wetlands of Wuhan by creating a wetland park as the central social space for the technology campus. The Zhangdu Lake landscape in the suburbs of Wuhan, with its submerged Chinese Fir and Sequoias, provided a living inspiration. The campus creates an urban bowl with a natural and indigenous wetland landscape as the focal element of the master plan. The buildings are perceived as progressively ascending hills with the central public plaza as the lake. The wetland acts as a retention pond to prevent flooding of the immediate urban environment.
The technology campus is situated in one of the new city centers of Wuhan City Master Plan, located at the center of Wujiashan New City, and positioned as the new center of the Linkong Economic Zone. It is a two-phased development of 262,000 sm with 3 office towers, 1 condominium, a school, retail stores, and a restaurant district. The campus is envisioned as a neighborhood built around a social public space with amenities. Social stairs and nodes are emphasized in the office architecture as moments of encounter and serendipity. They act as catalysts for innovation. The edge of the campus provides a sense of legible identity for the resident technology companies. While the center of the campus is a serene water body with stepped retail pavilions creating an amphitheater.
The architecture alludes to the local materiality of grey bricks used in traditional housing typologies in the region and other parts of China. The exterior walls of the retail podiums is a combination of solid textured grey brick, brick screens, and fritted glazing with brick bonding patterns. The tower exterior is a variation of grey terracotta screen and glazing, based on the orientation to optimize daylight and reduce heat gain.
